British Values

The Department for Education introduced a duty for schools to actively promote British Values, and at St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School these values are embedded throughout school life and closely align with our Catholic ethos and Gospel values.

As a Catholic school, we are committed to serving our local community while recognising and celebrating the multicultural, multi-faith and diverse society in which we live. We believe that every individual is created in the image and likeness of God and should be treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

We are committed to ensuring that no member of our school community is subjected to discrimination, intimidation or radicalisation. We promote equality of opportunity for all, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexuality, political views or social background.

Our aim is to prepare children for life in modern Britain by helping them become responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to society.

The five fundamental British Values are:

• Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Democracy

At St. Patrick's, pupils are encouraged to have a voice and take an active role in school life.

Children participate in election processes similar to those used in British democracy, including voting for representatives such as:

• School Council Members
• Mini Vinnies
• Eco Representatives
• School Leaders and Monitors
• Team Captains and other pupil leadership roles

Through these experiences, pupils learn about fairness, representation, responsibility and the importance of having their voices heard. We also provide opportunities for pupils to learn about democracy through assemblies, classroom discussions and visits from local representatives and community leaders.

The Rule of Law

Our school has a strong values-based ethos which promotes positive behaviour, responsibility and respect for others.

Children are taught the importance of rules and laws both within school and in wider society. They learn that rules help to keep people safe and ensure fairness for everyone.

This understanding is developed through:

• Behaviour policies
• Classroom charters
• Collective Worship and assemblies
• Visits from the Police and Community Support Officers
• Curriculum learning linked to citizenship and personal development

Pupils are encouraged to understand the consequences of their actions and the importance of making positive choices.

Individual Liberty

We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where pupils feel valued, respected and able to express themselves.

Children are encouraged to:

• Make informed choices
• Take responsibility for their actions
• Develop confidence and independence
• Understand their rights and responsibilities
• Express their opinions respectfully

We have robust safeguarding and anti-bullying procedures in place, including education around online safety and cyberbullying, ensuring pupils know how to stay safe while developing their individuality.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of the foundations of our Catholic ethos and underpins everything we do.

Pupils are taught to:

• Treat others with kindness and courtesy
• Value different viewpoints
• Show consideration for others
• Celebrate achievements and successes
• Resolve disagreements peacefully

Children demonstrate respect through their interactions with peers, staff, visitors and members of the wider community. We encourage all children to recognise the value and dignity of every person.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

As a Catholic school, we are proud of our faith and traditions while promoting understanding, respect and appreciation for people of all faiths and beliefs.

Through our Religious Education curriculum, The Vine and The Branches, children learn about other world faiths and are encouraged to explore the beliefs, practices and traditions of different religious communities. This learning is further enriched through our RHSE curriculum, where children develop respect, empathy and an understanding of the diverse society in which we live.

We believe that learning about different faiths helps children to develop open-mindedness, compassion and respect for others. To support this, we provide a range of opportunities for children to engage with people of different faith backgrounds, including:

• Visits to places of worship.
• Visitors from different faith communities coming into school.
• Educational workshops and enrichment activities.
• Learning about religious festivals, traditions and celebrations.
• Opportunities to ask questions and explore different beliefs respectfully.

These experiences help children to recognise both the similarities and differences between faith communities while understanding the importance of mutual respect and inclusion.

At St. Patrick's, we encourage our pupils to celebrate diversity and value the contribution that different faiths, cultures and backgrounds make to our local, national and global communities. Through this learning, our children develop into respectful, compassionate and informed citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

British Values at St. Patrick's

The promotion of British Values is not taught in isolation. They are woven throughout our curriculum, Catholic Life, Collective Worship, pupil leadership opportunities and daily interactions.

By the time pupils leave St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School, we want them to be confident, respectful and responsible young people who:
