    First Aid and Head Injury Procedures

    At St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School, the health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils is of the utmost importance. We aim to ensure that all first aid incidents are dealt with promptly, appropriately and communicated clearly to parents and carers.

    First Aid in School

    If your child requires first aid during the school day, they will be treated by a trained member of staff and the incident will be recorded in the school's first aid records.

    For minor accidents such as bumps, cuts and grazes, parents and carers will receive a First Aid Slip at the end of the school day. This slip will be placed in your child's bag and will provide details of:

    • How the injury occurred
    • The location of the injury
    • Any first aid treatment administered

    Parents and carers are asked to check their child's school bag each evening for any communications from school.

    How Parents and Carers Are Notified

    The method of communication will depend on the nature and severity of the injury.

    Minor Injuries

    • Treatment provided in school
    • Recorded in the first aid log
    • First Aid Slip sent home with the child

    Head Injuries

    • Parents and carers will be contacted by telephone.
    • In some cases, a text message or email may also be sent.
    • Children will be monitored throughout the school day by school staff.

    Injuries Requiring Further Observation or Treatment

    • Parents and carers will be contacted by telephone.
    • If necessary, arrangements will be made for the child to be collected from school.

    Facial or Intimate Injuries

    • Parents and carers will be contacted by telephone.
    • The child may either remain in school under observation or be collected, depending on the nature of the injury.

    Head Bump Procedure

    All head injuries are taken seriously and monitored carefully, as symptoms can sometimes develop after the initial incident.

    Minor Head Bumps

    Following a minor head bump:

    • Appropriate first aid will be administered.
    • The incident will be recorded in the accident book.
    • Parents and carers will be informed by telephone, email or a written accident form.
    • A green wristband will be placed on the child to make staff aware that a head injury has occurred during the day.
    • The wristband should be removed by parents or carers at home that evening.

    Children will continue to be monitored by school staff throughout the day for any signs of concern.

    Serious Head Injuries

    If a child:

    • Loses consciousness
    • Has a seizure or fit
    • Suffers a significant head injury

    An ambulance will be called immediately, and parents or carers will be contacted without delay.

    Medical advice should be sought if a child experiences any of the following symptoms following a head injury:

    • Loss of consciousness
    • Vomiting
    • Excessive sleepiness
    • Fits or abnormal movements
    • Persistent dizziness or difficulty walking
    • Unusual behaviour
    • Confusion or difficulty speaking

    Information Recorded Following a Serious Head Injury

    In the event of a serious head injury, school staff will record relevant information, including:

    • Circumstances leading to the injury
    • How the injury occurred
    • The height of any fall, where applicable
    • What the child struck their head against
    • Whether there was any loss of consciousness
    • The child's condition immediately afterwards
    • Any vomiting or other symptoms observed

    This information may be required by parents, medical professionals or emergency services.

    Communication with Parents and Carers

    We believe that effective communication is essential when a child is injured at school. Parents and carers will always be informed of head injuries and any other incidents that may require further monitoring, medical attention or collection from school.
