    Following the guidance of the Bishops of England and Wales and as advocated by the DfE (and the Welsh Assembly Government) RHSE will be firmly embedded in the PSHE framework as it is concerned with nurturing human wholeness and integral to the physical, spiritual, emotional, moral, social and intellectual development of pupils. It is centred on Christ’s vision of being human as good news and will be positive and prudent, showing the potential for development, while enabling the dangers and risks involved to be understood and appreciated.

    Why do we teach RHSE?

    At St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, our Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) curriculum is rooted in the belief that every person is uniquely created and loved by God. Through RHSE, we aim to support children in developing healthy relationships, understanding their own dignity and worth, and making positive choices that reflect Gospel values.

    Guided by Catholic teaching, we help children grow in knowledge, understanding and virtue so that they can flourish as confident, compassionate and responsible individuals. RHSE enables pupils to understand themselves, value others and recognise their role within their families, communities and the wider world.

    Our curriculum aims to develop children's:

    Values and Virtues

    We encourage children to:

    • Respect the dignity of every human person.
    • Appreciate the gift of life and God's creation.
    • Value their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others.
    • Recognise the importance of loving, healthy relationships.
    • Understand the significance of marriage and family life.
    • Develop responsibility for their actions and choices.
    • Show fidelity, compassion and respect in their relationships.

    Personal and Social Skills

    Through RHSE, children learn to:

    • Build positive friendships and relationships.
    • Develop self-esteem, confidence and resilience.
    • Manage feelings and emotions appropriately.
    • Resolve conflict respectfully and positively.
    • Show empathy, mercy and forgiveness.
    • Recognise and respond to peer pressure and online influences.
    • Assess risks and make informed choices to keep themselves safe.
    • Respect differences and value diversity within communities.

    Knowledge and Understanding

    Children develop an age-appropriate understanding of:

    • Catholic teaching on relationships, love and family life.
    • The importance of virtue in everyday decision-making.
    • Physical and emotional growth and development.
    • Human reproduction and the wonder of new life.
    • Personal safety, including online safety.
    • Healthy relationships and personal wellbeing.
    • Their responsibilities towards themselves and others as children of God.

    Curriculum Implementation

    How is RHSE taught?

    At St Patrick's, RHSE is delivered through the Ten:Ten Life to the Full programme, which has been approved by the Catholic Church and is fully aligned with statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements.

    The curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6, enabling children to revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts as they mature. High-quality planning ensures learning builds progressively over time, while key vocabulary is taught explicitly to support understanding and discussion.

    We recognise that parents are the primary educators of their children and value the partnership between home and school in supporting children's personal, social and spiritual development.

    Life to the Full Programme Structure

    The programme is organised into three key modules:

    Module 1: Created and Loved by God

    Children develop an understanding of their own uniqueness and dignity as individuals made in God's image.

    Through this module, pupils learn about:

    • Self-worth and identity.
    • Physical and emotional wellbeing.
    • Respecting their bodies.
    • Growth and development.
    • Changes during puberty.
    • The wonder of human life and creation.

    Module 2: Created to Love Others

    This module focuses on relationships and teaches children how to form healthy, respectful and positive connections with others.

    Children learn about:

    • Family life and friendships.
    • Communication and conflict resolution.
    • Trust, forgiveness and kindness.
    • Personal boundaries.
    • Consent in age-appropriate contexts.
    • Bullying prevention.
    • Keeping safe, including online safety.

    The NSPCC PANTS resources and additional safeguarding materials are used to support learning throughout this module.

    Module 3: Created to Live in Community

    Children explore their responsibilities as members of local, national and global communities.

    Through this module, pupils learn about:

    • The Trinity and God's call to community.
    • Catholic Social Teaching.
    • Stewardship and care for creation.
    • Rights and responsibilities.
    • Service and the Common Good.
    • Making a positive contribution to society.

    The module encourages children to recognise how they can use their gifts and talents to support others and make a difference in the world.

    What difference does our RHSE curriculum make?

    Assessment

    Assessment in RHSE focuses on children's understanding, reflection and personal development.

    Learning is evidenced through:

    • Class discussion and pupil voice.
    • Reflection activities.
    • Floor books.
    • Written tasks and booklets where appropriate.
    • Before-and-after assessments completed for each unit.

    These approaches enable teachers to monitor progress, celebrate achievement and ensure children develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
