English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School, we celebrate the rich cultural and linguistic diversity within our school community. We recognise that speaking more than one language is a tremendous strength and an important part of a child's identity.

Children who have English as an Additional Language (EAL) bring a wealth of experiences, knowledge and cultural understanding to our school. We are committed to ensuring that every child feels welcomed, valued and fully included in all aspects of school life.

We understand that learning a new language takes time and that children may be highly capable learners, even if they are still developing their confidence in English. Our staff carefully support pupils to develop their English language skills whilst also recognising and celebrating their home language and culture.

How We Support EAL Learners

At St. Patrick's, we provide a range of support to help children successfully access the curriculum and become confident communicators. This may include:

• A warm and supportive induction for new arrivals.
• Targeted language support within the classroom.
• Visual resources and practical learning opportunities.
• Vocabulary development and language-rich experiences.
• Support from teaching assistants and class teachers.
• Opportunities to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
• Working closely with parents and carers to support learning at home.
• Celebrating different languages, cultures and traditions across our school community.

We believe that strong partnerships with families are essential and encourage parents to continue speaking and developing their home language, as this supports children's overall language development and learning.
